AI agent for small business: an assistant that prepares, you decide
The ALGORITM, an AI automation studio based in Lévis (Quebec), builds AI agents for small service businesses. An AI agent is a program that reads a request written in everyday language, pulls the information it needs from your tools, and prepares the next step: a reply, a quote, a record. The difference from a standard automation is that it adapts when the wording changes from one request to the next.
AI agent or automation: which one do you need?
An automation always follows the same path: "when a form comes in, create the record and send the email." It's fast, predictable, and it's enough in most cases. We prefer it whenever it does the job.
An AI agent becomes useful when the input is free-form text: a client describing what they need in their own words, an email that mixes three questions, a price request missing half the information. The agent understands the request, spots what's missing, and prepares a reply you only have to review.
Either way, we start with the process, not the tool. The page on business process automation explains how we choose.
What an AI agent can do in a small service business
- Answer information requestsit reads the request, checks your documents (services, areas served, lead times) and prepares the reply.
- Sort your inboxit flags what's urgent, what needs an answer and what can wait, and prepares the simple replies.
- Prepare a quotefrom a request written in everyday language, passing it to your accounting software as a draft (see accounting automation).
- Answer the team's questionsfrom your process documents, so everything stops landing on you.
An example from a real engagement
This agent's first engagement is our own. At The ALGORITM, every business message that comes in (WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Messenger, email) is read by a first agent, which drafts a reply in the tone we use with that person, based on the conversation history and our notes. A second agent reviews the draft and judges whether it can go out or should wait for the founder. For now, it runs in "shadow" mode: nothing goes out on its own, and every decision is logged and compared with the founder's before it is trusted with a single send.
It's the same rule we apply with a client: we measure how often the agent agrees with you before letting it act on its own.
What we don't do
- No agent that sends on its own from day one.Autonomy is earned, message by message, when the numbers show the agent decides the way you would.
- No generic chatbotstuck on your website. An agent serves one specific process in your business.
- No made-up information. The agent answers from your documents; when the information isn't there, it says so and the question comes back to you.
Frequently asked questions
Can the AI agent make mistakes?
Yes, like any new hire. That's why it prepares and you decide, at least at first. We compare its decisions with yours; it only gains autonomy on the cases where it has proven itself.
Where does my data go?
The agent reads your tools through connections you authorize and can revoke. The text it processes goes through an AI model; we tell you which one, where it's hosted and what's kept, before we start.
Do I need to understand AI?
No. You don't need to understand the plumbing, only the result. Your team is trained to work with the agent before the end of the program; to go further, see how we work as an AI consultant.
How long does it take to set up an agent?
The agent is part of our 30-day program, described on the home page, when the audit shows it solves one of your top three bottlenecks. The first automation is live within 7 days; an agent that first needs to learn your cases can take the weeks that follow.
